The popular 4% rule comes from US research (Trinity Study, 1998) based on US market and inflation data. India has structurally higher inflation (5โ€“7% CPI vs 2โ€“3% in the US), rupee depreciation risk, and a shorter track record for index funds. We default to 3.5% SWR โ€” more conservative and appropriate for Indian conditions. Advanced mode lets you adjust from 3% to 5% to stress-test different scenarios.

We separate nominal returns from real returns explicitly: Real Return = Nominal Return โˆ’ Inflation (floored at 0.5% to prevent division errors). Inputs include separate pre-retirement return (your accumulation phase), post-retirement return (typically more conservative โ€” you shift toward debt), and general inflation rate. All three compound differently. Most tools use a single undifferentiated return rate.

Coast FIRE is technically the most difficult FIRE type to calculate correctly. The coast threshold is not a fixed number โ€” it changes every year because it depends on how many years remain until your target retirement age. Our algorithm checks year-by-year: at year Y, is FV(corpus, remaining years) โ‰ฅ FIRE target? A static threshold calculation (which most calculators use) gives Coast FIRE ages that are 3โ€“5 years too early.
